The Rijksluchtvaartschool(Dutch Government Flight Training School)was founded on Januari 1st 1946 on Gilze Rijen Airforce Base for training pilots for civil aviation. In the same year began the training of airforce pilots on Gilze Rijen as well and the base became too busy. Therefore the RLS was diverted to Eelde Airport(Groningen). The RLS started with ex RAF Tiger Moths, Harvards and Beechcrafts D-18S. Soon the Tiger Moths and Harvard were replaced by SAAB Safirs. In respect with the introduction of jet airliners in the 60's the Dutch Government ordered in 1962 seven Morane Saulniers MS760B for jettraining. During the period 1946 till 1960 the RLS have had in total 30 Tiger Moth's in its fleet. The PH-UAO flew with RLS from 1949 till 1960. It was sold to the NLS, Rotterdam Airport where it flew till 1970. The aircraft had been restored and since 1992 it is flying again with Dutch Tiger Flight, Lelystad Airport.

For the training of both military and civilian pilots the North American Harvard has been of considerable importance. In 1935 North American introduced the NA-16. From this prototype, the trainer AT-6 Texan was developed. Already in 1938 the plane was ordered by the USAAF, the RAF and France. The RAF renamed the AT-6 in Harvard. Over the years a number of modifications were added which resulted in the variants Harvard II, IIA and IIB. In total there are more than 15,000 Harvard and AT-6's built of which 1500 at Noorduyn in Canada. The PH-UBN(ex. US.Fiscal yearnr. 41-16221)is one of the six Harvards which have been in the RLS-fleet from 1949 till 1960. It was sold to a Belgian company and scrapped.

In 1990, the RLS bought 9 Slingsby T.67C-3 Firefly for the basic training. They replaced the eight Cessna F.152-IIs operating in this role since 1980. When in August 1991, the KLM took over the RLS and transferred it into the KLM Luchtvaartschool(KLM Flight Academy): the aircraft were repainted in the basic KLM colours. The T.67 Firefly was a further developed Fournier RF-6. René Fournier designed his RF-6 in 1974. It was based on his earlier all-wood motor gliders with high aspect wings. He started a factory in Nitray in France especially for the RF-6. After having built 40 aircraft, he ran into financial difficulties and had to close his doors. Fournier had sold the license to Slingsby, which further developed the RF-6. The wooden construction was replaced by composite and the aircraft was made completely acrobatic. This became the T.67C of which around 250 were built. The PH-SGG was registered with KLM Luchtvaartschool BV, Eelde, was withdrawn from use in November 2001 and sold to France.

In 1969 3 HFB-320 Hansa Jets were purchased to replace the Morana Saulniers. This was not a really happy purchase because the Hansa Jets were noisy, thursty and expensive to maintain. Two were sold to the USA in 1977 while the last disappeared from the fleet in 1983. In 1973 seven Cessna 500 Citations were purchased which produced much less noise and were more economical to operate. They remained in service until 1991. In 1991 the Rijksluchtvaartschool was privatized and taken over by KLM for the symbolic sum of one Dutch guilder to continue as an independent company under the name KLM Luchtvaartschool (KLS) and later KLM Flight Academy.

IIn 1991 the Rijksluchtvaartschool was privatized and taken over by KLM for the symbolic sum of one Dutch guilder to continue as an independent company under the name KLM Luchtvaartschool (KLS) and later KLM Flight Academy. The KLM Flight Academy has two Twinstars in its fleet. The PH-KFA is in sevice since September 2018. The Diamond DA42 Twin Star is a 4-seater produced in Austria. Its airframe is made largely of composite materials. The aircraft was certified in Europe and 2005 in the USA in 2004. The original Tielert diesel engine was replaced in 2009 by the Austro E4 300 4 cylinder diesel engine, designed and manufactured by a subsidiary of Diamond. The Austro engine delivers 20% more power, while giving better fuel economy than the Tielert engine and results in a higher gross weight and increased performance. This version, the D42NG, has an integrated Garmin G1000 with a Garmin GFC700 autopilot plus the modern instruments such as those used in the today's generation aircraft.
