The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 made its maiden flight on August 29, 1970. It was designed as an wide body airbus for mainly domestic flights in the USA with a typical seating for 270 in two classes or a maximum seating for 380. Later models, such as the DC-10-30 and DC-10-40 had intercontinental ranges. In March 1974, a Turkish Airlines DC-10 crashed due to a design flaw in the cargo doors. In 1979 an American Airlines DC-10 lost an engine during takeoff and crashed. All DC-10’s in the USA were grounded until it was determined that the engine breakdown had been caused by improper maintenance. The aircraft had a widespread public apprehension and a poor fuel economy reputation. When all design flaws were rectified and fleet hours increased its safety record became comparable to similar era passenger jets. Production stopped in 1989. 386 aircraft were sold plus 60 of the military version KC-10. KLM has had 13 DC-10-30s in service from December 1972 to 1995. Some were leased to VIASA, PAL and Garuda or sold after a short time. Of the 14, KLM itself has had 5 in long-term service. The PH-DTB was sold to Northwest Airlines in 1995 and became N229NW. The DC-10 was replaced by the MD-11. The N237NW was owned by Northwest Airlines, which cooperated with KLM within Skyteam. One side of the aircraft had the Northwest livery while the other side had the livery of KLM. Martinair had a total of 9 DC10-30s in service from November 1973 to September 1995. The PH-MBT was leased to Garuda from 1979 to 1992 and sold to the Royal Netherlands Air Force in 1995 to be converted into the KDC-10. The DC-10’s of Martinair were replaced by the MD-11. The aircraft were sold to the USA in 2021. To replace the KDC-10’s the Netherlands, together with its NATO partners Germany, Belgium, Norway and the Czech Republic, bought nine Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport), five of which are stationed at Eindhoven Air Base.
